Aoibhe Ní – Tunisian Crochet

Aoibhe Ní will take you gently through all the techniques you’ll need to make Tunisian Crochet using her beginner mini-shawl pattern, “Love Grows”.

This shawl will teach you Tunisian Simple Stitch, a Short Row technique, as well as picking up stitches, and a gorgeous lace eyelet.

What you learn in class will ensure you can complete your shawl with absolute confidence and carry on to create many more beautiful pieces.

A little knowledge of traditional crochet is required for this class. A familiarity with double crochet stitches is all that is needed.

Vintage Tea Trips 

Event Type: Tour | Duration: 80 minutes

How would you like to start your Woollinn experience with a tour of the Irish coastline, while enjoying a decadent afternoon tea accompanied by a dash of textile history?

Take a step back in time this June and experience a unique tour of the Irish Coastline. Sit back and relax as you are treated to a beautiful selection of afternoon treats and hot cups of tea (or coffee) while taking inthe beautiful scenic route of Dún Laoigharie to Bray. The onboard host will regale you with the stories behind local landmarks and dive in to some textile history tid-bits too. This is not a fully guided tour, there’s plenty of time to take in the sights and chat with new friends and old, while listing to come classic 1950s jazz.

Unaccustomed to ever using a cable needle for Aran knitting, Edel wasn’t aware of her dexterity around cabling large numbers of stitches until knitting in public in recent years.

Keen to free “cable needle hostages” she took time to break down her method and even make further tweaks to her own technique.

This method is invaluable to any aran or cable knitter from hats to blankets. You will never look back and it needs little practice.

In this workshop, Susanne walks you through an easy and fun modular pattern recipe so that you can make your own custom knit.

Diarmuid Commins – A Dyer’s Walk Through The Countryside

Event Type: Workshop, Other | Duration: 3 hours

Learn how to make your own natural dyed yarns!
Talk and Demonstration with completed samples for discussion.

What dye bearing plants are available for the natural dyer while out for a walk? We take a look at common Irish dye plants and mordants, their history, and how to use them to make our own unique, naturally dyed yarns.

Diarmuid will bring along dyed samples and get everyone interacting with the pieces, so the effects of (for example) different mordants can be appreciated in the pieces.

Students will leave with a knowledge and appreciation of the natural dye process, so they can begin experimenting as soon as they return home (No dyeing will take place during the talk).

Yarn Designer and owner of S Twist Wool, Diarmuid Commins has been bringing yarns made from Irish fleece to knitters and crafters around the world for over 5 years.

Mieka John – Thrumming 101 – Super Cozy Mittens

Event Type: Workshop, Knitting | Duration: 3 hours

This workshop is aimed at the advanced beginner so why not take a dive into Thrumming this June!
Those cold winters call for more than just any kind of mittens. Thrumming is a technique that incorporates pieces of fibre/roving into your knitting creating a soft, insulating layer between you and that winter chill. These cozy mittens will keep your hands nice and toasty until you can make it to your next cup of tea or hot chocolate.

In this workshop, you’ll learn a bit about fibre, some history, and then get your hands on some yarn and roving to try it out yourself!  You’ll get to choose from a variety of colours of fibre to add a splash of colour to your winter wardrobe. Some speedy knitters might even have a full mitten by the end of the class but all students will go home with a new skill under their belt and their new favourite winter mittens on their needles.

Aleks Byrd – Vikkel

Create faux cables without a cable needle!

Vikkels are faux cable stitch patterns created from carefully placed stitched stitches used in Estonian knitting. They add a nice textured detail to any knit and are easy to do. This is an Intermediate class and students should be comfortable knitting in the round and reading from charts.

Students will learn:
• How to read vikkel pattern charts
• Placement of twisted stitches to create the faux cable
• How to knit twisted stitches or 1/1 cable stitches without a cable needle

Often our knits can sit unfinished right at the final stage for far too long. Sometimes even years! Come join Carol Feller in this class to learn how to get that knit finished. Learn all her favourite finishing techniques that can make all the difference. We’ll learn how to pick up stitches, seam your knits, create button band and single-row buttonholes, afterthought pockets, and try a little bit of I-Cord edging. There will be a special focus on techniques that are useful for seamless knits.

This class is suitable for adventurous beginners through to accomplished knitters.

Mina Philips – Pattern Hacking

Do you want to knit a pattern but your gauge isn't quite right?

 Or maybe you want to make one part a bit bigger/smaller? This class will show you how to use a few simple calculations and principles to easily make adjustments with confidence. This is particularly handy when knitting garments and you want to make some changes. We will also go over things to consider when you want to make yarn substitutions (be it fiber type or yarn weight) and what you want to bear in mind when making these changes.

Dive into Fair Isle

This class will show students how to knit fair isle with the two handed technique, creating an even-tensioned, almost reversible woven fabric. During this class students will be taught the continental method of knitting the knit stitch, and the traditional method, then shown how to use both hands to create these stitches using two different colours of yarn.

Students should be comfortable knitting both knit and purl stitches.

Olga Buraya-Kefelian – Novelty Cables

We all love the look of cabled knits but some of them can be quite complex to execute! In this class you will be presented with 5 other novel options for creating cables other than the traditional technique. Students will be presented with a new accessory pattern to make using one of these techniques.

  • Ways of picking up stitches on purl side and work welts
  • Different methods for achieving 3D looking cables using 5 methods
  • How to perform several methods of cable decreases

Karie Westermann – Nordic Traditions

This class will introduce you to the many varied knitting traditions of Scandinavia and the Nordic region.

Together with Danish knitwear designer Karie Westermann, you will explore Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian, and Danish knitting heritage as you knit colourwork ‘the Nordic way’. You will discuss authentic colour choices and regional differences in colourwork among other things. You’ll have the choice between making two different styles of wrist warmers on the day – and we’ll even talk about a certain famous Faroese jumper! You will also get a chance to look at Karie’s gorgeous samples.

This is an intermediate level class. You need to be comfortable knitting in the round and be able to follow an easy colourwork chart.

Mina Philipp – Pinwheel Scrap Blanket

Uncover the mysteries of a Pinwheel Scrap Blanket

The pinwheel scrap blanket is a different, more travel-friendly take on the popular mitred square scrappy blankets that many knitters enjoy creating. The modular nature of this pattern makes it very travel friendly and easy to pick up and work on in small chunks. The seaming method is also very simple and easy to do with a crochet hook, making this a much quicker method than using a mattress-stitch seam.

In this class we will cover all the techniques required to work these squares on some mini squares. We will learn how to use German short rows to create the triangles, how to seam the squares closed as you are working them, as well as how to seam the squares together at the end to create your blanket.

This is a beginner level class. If you can knit/purl; cast on/bind off; have knit a few accessories, then have no fear – a Pinwheel Scrap Blanket could be in your future!

Mieka John – Colorwork Cowl With A Twist: Mokum Cowl

If you want to get your feet wet with your first colorwork project, this quick knit cowl class is for you!

 Learn how to do a crochet provisional cast on, folded hem, and a cool colorwork effect created with your floats. You’ll leave this class with a beautiful swatch packed with new techniques, a copy of the Mokum cowl pattern and the confidence to take on any colorwork project!

Named after the city’s nickname, “Mokum”, a yiddish word that means “safe haven”, this cowl is inspired by everyday life in Amsterdam. The rhythmic geometric motifs are pulled from patterns found around the city from the canals to the lively walls of Amsterdam Centraal. The Mokum Cowl sits cozily next to your face and is designed with stranded colorwork to block out the unforgiving wind on that chilly bike ride home.

Karie Westermann – Steeking with Confidence

Event Type: Workshop, Knitting | Duration: 3 hrs

Learn how to safely cut into your knitted fabric with this hands-on workshop.

Karie Westermann will teach you how to use waste stitches to set up a steek, how to secure your steek stitches, how to finish a steeked opening neatly,  and (of course) how to cut your fabric. The technique is particularly useful for large colourwork projects but can be applied to any knitted fabric.

This is an intermediate class. You need to be comfortable knitting in the round. It also has some homework attached!

Aleks Byrd – Roosimine

Learn an Estonian inlay technique with Aleks Byrd

Roosimine is an Estonian inlay technique that creates the appearance of embroidery through intentional floats in contrasting yarn on the right side of your knitting. It’s the perfect technique to add some embellishment to your knitting that is easier than intarsia. The name Roosimine translates to “decorating with roses”, which comes from a style of short stitch embroidery done on the Estonian island of Muhu.

This is an intermediate class and students should be comfortable knitting in the round and reading from charts.

Olga Buraya-Kefelian – 3 Dimensional Knitwear

Event Type: Workshop, Knitting | Duration: 3 hours

This class includes a demonstration with an AV presentation as well as a short lecture about 3D knitwear in hand knitting.
It will be part swatch-fest and all inspiration. Olga will present her 3D design philosophy and gear you up to your own discovery of knitwear in a new light!

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Introductory lecture on several basic principles of dimensional texture used in knitwear
  • Learning cast on and bind off varieties for stretchy edging and its purpose for dimensional knitwear
  • Learning to work partial knitting and short rows and their differences
  • Swatching a series of techniques and reviewing all the possibilities
  • Make either ​a Ginga Cowl​ or​ ​Moko-Moko Cowl

Experienced designer and writer Karie Westermann will guide you through the best practices and the common pitfalls to avoid when writing an effective knitting pattern. We will talk about the anatomy of a pattern, how to write for an audience, and how to develop your own style sheet. Together we’ll look at examples of pattern writing, work out how to write clear and concise technical instructions, and discuss what makes a good knitting pattern.

Please note that this is not a design class and students should be comfortable with basic knitting.
